Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri). Mixed Coniferous forests.
Mating for life, one pair of Steller's Jays will dominate a territory around their nest where they tend to be resident year-long. Migrating seasonally only to higher and lower altitudes, most of these jays remain in one area. Occasionally, high numbers of juveniles will display irruptive migration during which they will flock to new areas. Their range is from northern Canada southward along the coast to central California and to the southern extent of the Sierra Nevada. Inland, they range throughout the Rocky Mountains into central Mexico. The southern limits of their range in California appear to be defined by the lack of continuous coniferous forest.
