Wapiti (Cervus canadensis). Coastal rain forest.
Born in early summer, Wapiti calves are still nursing as winter approaches. Gestation for hinds is approximately 250 days and hinds enter rut during early fall, about three months after giving birth to their calf. Calves remain with their mothers for about a year until the next calf is born. In the small herd of 14 Wapiti to which this mother and calf belonged, this was the only calf.
