Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri). Mixed Coniferous forests.
The crest of the Steller's Jay is raised during times of stress and during aggressive displays. Sitting atop a maple tree with crest raised may indicate a territorial claim or may indicate stress due to its exposure to a potential attack by a Cooper's Hawk, an accipiter that preys heavily on these birds in the Northwest. A high perch allows the bird to survey its territory for intruders and predators. Despite territory boundaries, an alert call indicating the approach of a predator will rally surrounding jays that will join in a mobbing attack.
